BBQ Season approaches…
Spring is coming, and you know what that means - it’s BBQ time! Of course, it’s ALWAYS BBQ time at Smokin’ Bettie’s, but with the warmer weather coming we’re breaking the grills and smokers out of hibernation and getting ready to light the fires outdoors.
Which brings me to today’s topic: GRILL SAFETY. According to the National Fire Protection Association (nfpa.org), there are about 8900 house fires caused by grills EACH YEAR. Most of them are caused by gas grills, 60% of them occur during the summer months (generously defined as May - August), and almost a third of them (29%) are attributed partly to grills that had not been cleaned. So, consider these basic tips:
Clean your grill(s) NOW. Do it now so you can BBQ on a moment’s notice.
If you use gas/propane, check your fuel lines and replace as necessary. (NOTE: Smokin’ Bettie’s makes no judgement on the ‘gas vs. wood’ debate as a grilling fuel, but smoking should always use real, unadulterated wood/wood chips/wood pellets.)
Remove grease build-ups from equipment, gratings, drip trays - and while you’re at it, clean out/replace your grease trap if your grill has one. Many models have replacement, heavy-aluminum trays/buckets that you can purchase.
Make sure your grill/smoker is at least 10 feet from any house, barn, deck, or other structure.
DO NOT GRILL OR SMOKE ON A WOOD DECK! You’d be surprised the number of times we’ve seen this Calamity Waiting To Happen.
Check the nfpa.org website for more information. Be safe, and as always - EAT MORE BBQ!
